NSE Rover, Jan 92.
The NSE rover allowed you a week's the freedom of the vast Network South East area incl Inter city services for £63.50. The drawback was a 1000 restriction Mon - Fri which saw some long bus moves from Leighton to get to Oxford or wherever for the 1000 start. Good fun none the less!
Monday 13th Jan 92
Leighton High St bus stop was an unusual starting venue. A National thrashing up Wing hill, then High Wycombe for a VR to Reading.2.5 hours after leaving Leighton 207010 was thumping across the levels to Basingstoke. At Salisbury 50030 was in the loco siding with a “not to be moved” totem. Returning East behind 33102, a surprise when we crossed 33109 on a load 2 thumper substitute.
Later in the afternoon Paddington had a good choice of duff hauled Mk I commuter trains. I opted for the 1738 Paddington-Banbury as it was the sole surviving booked hauled turn via High Wycombe. 47587 put in a good attack on the climb up to Saunderton summit, whilst just a single spotter watched the action at Princes Risborough. All new 165012/019 impressed less on a following Aylesbury service, then a VR home.

Paying out for a single to Northampton saw some 321 to Bletchley with the sole surviving 310 diagram in 310107 forward. Bus moves from Northampton to Bedford and Biggleswade for ex Bletchley beast in 317332 on a Peterborough-Kings X service for a 91 forward from Stevenage. Padd-Oxford moves followed with a fill in move getting an elderly, rattling 53083/54381 from Oxford to Didcot. For variety 86248 on a Euston-Shrewsbury got me home via the Keynes.

A later start saw the NSE rover take me just to Northampton for a Midline Day Ranger forward. WCML problems saw all traffic diverted via Northampton. A very late 0903 Euston-Holyhead made an unscheduled stop at Rugby with a tatty 47238 dragging the dead tram which had failed at Weedon. A short trip to Nuneaton followed during which harassed staff were using the buffet radio phone to advise of missed ferry connections etc.
Moves sampling both diesel and electric units followed with a lively run from Stafford to Rugby on the 1606 Manchester P-Rugby Trent Valley “flier” with 304030.

After enduring a 2 hour plus bus ride via Aylesbury and Oxford I arrived at Oxford station only to see the withering sight of Dutch, very NB, 47364 just leaving with the 1000 Oxford-Padd!!!. An hour’s wait for dull, by comparison, saw 47587 on the next Padd. That evening I got a front coach compo seat on the 1650 Padd-Banbury. With many faces hovering, but not boarding I eventually got off to cover the very last hauled Padd-High Wycombe loco hauled service.
The hoverers had the gen as power was 47364. The commuters were joking re the lack of heat but less so on the number of cranks on “their” train. Approching High Wycombe a young female commuter pulled out her “goodbye dear old train” banner to aah’s all round. I bailed at Princes Risborough and there was just time to view a quality “Chiltern Loco Hauled finale” headboard. The local spotter seen earlier in the week here appreciated the rarity value of 47364 less, he was expecting some 50!.
From Aylesbury an ageing, smoking 6 car DMU formation was a better option than the bus home. 2 passengers who joined my DMU coach, quickly changed coaches fearing death from fume inhalation. 87023 home on a Euston-Liverpool was on a very different railway.

Stonebridge Park (Sudbury) loco sidings have seen a great variety of stabled power but today was a personal first with Clayton 8568 stabled there!. Later my Crompton mileage increased with drab grey liveried 33109 on the 1115 Waterloo-Exeter for 33102 on a Salisbury-Basingstoke 2 coach thumper substitute back. (NSE Rovers were'nt valid West of Salisbury unfortunately). Then off to Victoria for ED bashing to Gatwick.
