Class 40’s on the Midland Main Line

Imagine the scene, the usual gang of kids are hanging about in the car park adjoining platform 1 at Luton in Jan/Feb1970. Around lunchtime 1M51 arrives right time for its booked stop at Luton. “It’s a box” comes the claim, “a namer too” shout follows. A few cheers and jigs on us all realising it was a “box” (class 40) arriving. D229 “Saxonia” was working the 0800 Manchester – St Pancras that day, a rare but not unknown class on the Midland by 1970. A very different whistle and growl on departure compared with our peaks is something I can still just about remember that grey winter’s day.

Unfortunately the actual date of 229’s rare working has been lost with the passage of time but some sample recorded class 40 visits to the Southern end of the Midland are listed here for archive interest

WCML diversions – Regular producers of 40’s until these trains were incorporated into the full Midland timetable in 1962/3 with class 45/46 haulage.
