Old Linslade, 101282
Total horror at Old
Linslade. 81016 was working 1S25 2255 (08/12) Euston-Glasgow some 2 hrs late (eh
problems at Etn) when she collided with rails that had fallen off a freight
train inside Linslade tunnel. The 81 and all bar 1 of the coaches were
derailed, the 81 scraping the tunnel wall before colliding with Stoke Road
bridge’s central pillar at 75mph. The impact tragically killed one of the loco
crew, the train careering on for another 60 yards before stopping. All the
coaches and loco remained upright. This is the scene 30 hours later with the 81
back on the rails, wheelskated and awaiting 08235 for a tow to BY TMD. When
looking at this picture perhaps spare a thought for the train crew and other
railway rescue staff involved that night .
