Gone fishing, Feb 86
Thursday Feb 20th saw a lunchtime departure from work for 310064 from Leighton Buzzard to Euston to purchase the freedom of the world, an all line rover. A procession of down cans and sevens ended with 81007 on the 1718 cobbler. I did this to the Keynes to cover the 1100 Stranraer-Euston, which being the engine off the Euston-Stranraer vans often roared, and today got 85031. That night, one of the few diagrammed turns, the 2110 Euston-Stranraer (S06) got 85026 to Carlisle for Ronnie (85018) forward to Carstairs on the 2124 Bristol-Glasgow (S19). A short interlude on 27’s then we were at Glasgow Central for the 1115 Harwich with 87013 as power. This was done to Carlisle where 81022 returned us to Scotland on the 0747 Cardiff-Glasgow. The fish stayed on diagram and was a rare sight on the 1705 Glasgow-Euston, which was duly cleared for a thou near Penrith. The replacement driver at Preston failed her despite a superb run, but we simply crossed to the opposite platform to join 81004 on the following 1715 Glasgow-Birmingham! This made another solid turn the 2130 Coventry-Preston at Wolverhampton, which tonight had 85022.
As Saturday began, 81020 powered us to Carlisle on S06 for a rare trouble free run back to Euston from Carlisle on the 2030 Inverness-Euston behind 85036. Just for a change, engineering work in the Proof House Jn area saw Euston-Birmingham’s diverted via Aston with special diagrams. We were lucky to get round trips behind both 81003 and 85004.
Sunday mornings were never good for roarers so 86314 on the 1250 Euston-Liverpool had to return me North to Crewe. Things quickly improved with 85024 to Wolves on the 1416 Preston-Poole for 81005 to Wigan on the 1620 Brum-Preston. Some can returned me to Crewe for 81003 to Glasgow on the 1613 from Bristol. Thick snow over Beattock had frozen the pipes up and it took a good hour to blowtorch the ice away to detach the Edinburgh portion.
Late Sunday night at a deserted Glasgow Central with 81007 at the head of the Bristol overnight saw a rapid return south behind “my fish”. A Monday daytime Crompton interlude saw me back at Euston for 85032 on the 1718 Cobbler. A quick trip home then back South for S06 with 85025 taking me to Carlisle for 85034 straight back on the Up Stranraer. Tuesday daytime at work then back to Euston for S06, which that night got a vile 86245. 81004 was however compensation on the solid 87 turn, the 2230 Euston-Inverness S25 and incredibly on arrival at Crewe overtook 81014 on S19! So fish 14 to Preston for the 0225 Preston-Birmingham back home whatever the power, as work beckoned. My luck was in, as 81007 obliged! Happy Days….!!
