Summer Saturday "nb's and bowl out's" August 97

The Summer of 1997 still produced a reasonable day out on a "West Midlands Daytripper" with plenty of loco hauled trains

to cover but with class 47'8, 86'2, 87 and 90 the dominant power. Usually a few RES red 47's would produce which in a way

were like the old "nb" 47's for the basher of 1997. Saturday August 9th 1997 was to prove a bit different with some proper "nb"

power out and a bowl out to finish the day too.

So with just one enthusiastic son for company today, we joined the 0624 Brum unit at Leighton which produced 321406 to the Keynes.

A short fester, then with a "its a seven" shout, 87028 screamed in on 1S47 0620 Euston - Glasgow.  A short burst behind "Lord President"

to Rugby where we rejoined 321406 to a few surprised looks from "normals"  who had seen us bail at MK! At Coventry in warm, hot

Summer Saturday sun there were a large number of bashers gathered, the gen being along the lines of "all the twanks (47'8's) were failed on

Toton" and there was all sorts of exotic power on cross country trains!

My scepticism plummeted when the late running 1M20 0603 Padd - Manchester warbled in with 31420/31434 upfront. At New St we

watched the 31's stagger North still Manchester bound, their driver shaking his head! A "can" back to Coventry for the quoted big winner!

Grey 47305 arrived right time with 1S49 0634 Poole - Glasgow and we all piled aboard the rather sticky "coffins". 87009 screamed back to

International for 47777, then a tram, 310110 and 87031 "Hal" from New St to Coventry.

A very disappointing 47826 strummed in on 1M13 0920 Weymouth - Liverpool which we did to New St (this was the only 47'8 seen out all day!)

47549 was over on platform 5 at New St with 1V46 0930 Glasgow - Paignton whilst we did a reasonable 47767 forward on 1M56 1030

Paignton -Manchester to Wolves. A few 310's were then enjoyed before 47305 was rejoined on 1O14 1510 Manchester - Poole. A good few

bashers were aboard and many bailed at Int'l including us, to be sure of making 1M79 1348 Ramsgate - Birmingham. The "Buzzard" aka as Smudger Smith

bellowed "their 35 late, easy make" so we all got back on board. We were checked outside Coventry and to our horror viewed the Ramsgate

already in Coventry's platform. As we arrived 37678/37417 were just leaving (now only 25 late) with 50 plus bashers on board 47305 bowled, big time!

Rather than wait for 47525 to return on the Brighton, a can took us to Rugby, where the booked 319007 was waiting to work the 1842

Rugby - Brighton South. The 319 whirred South through Watford Gap before we bailed at the Keynes for 321413 home, an excellent, varied

day over, especially for my then 10 year old son.

The 47'8's had apparently had "contaminated  engine oil" which saw a few days of "nb's and bowl out's" in August 1997!

The "Ramsgate" had 2 x 37 as some sort of "Ned New's" mag promotion from memory...
